The design challenge for this project was to arrange three rectangular boxes in any way in order to meet the needs of the client. After initial programming and allocation diagramming, the arrangement of the house evolved into the three boxes staggered beside each other, utilizing the open air courtyard in between the two ends. Careful consideration was put into the allocation of spaces, making sure that there was display spaces for both the butterfly collection and the baby grand piano.

The Lab family loves bright colors and materials reminiscent of the outdoors. They requested exterior views from all the main rooms for entertainment purposes. In order to display the butterfly collection, columns and skylights, as well as suspension systems were utilized to show off the hard work. The Labs also wanted to highlight their son's piano talent by making the piano a central focal point of the home. The baby grand piano was placed in the main living space, allowing for viewing from guests. Thicker walls and acoustics were taken into account to allow for their son to practice at all hours and others in the house not be disturbed.

The Lab residence is home to Mr. and Mrs. Lab and their son. Mr. and Mrs. Lab are both scientists who have contemporary taste and a love of the outdoors. Mr. Lab is an avid butterfly collector and loves to display his immense collection around the house. Mrs. Lab, who has worked in many challenging environments throughout her career has strong allergies to formaldehyde and mold. Their talented son is a teen piano prodigy who enjoys practicing for his parents and friends during the day.
